The Bricklayer is responsible for performing professional masonry work, including brick, block, and stone construction and repair, for residential and commercial projects. The role ensures quality, accuracy, and structural integrity of all masonry works while complying with Australian Standards and workplace safety requirements.

Task & responsibilities

Duties:

  • Lay bricks, blocks, and pre-cut stones to construct walls, partitions, piers, columns, arches, retaining walls, and decorative masonry structures.
  • Read and interpret architectural plans and specifications to carry out masonry tasks.
  • Apply mortar layers and ensure correct consistency, coverage, alignment, and joint thickness.
  • Cut, shape, and trim bricks and blocks to fit openings, corners, and architectural features.
  • Erect and dismantle scaffolding and work platforms safely.
  • Construct and repair freestanding walls, garden walls, retaining walls, and other masonry structures.
  • Monitor and maintain quality, alignment, plumb, and finishes, ensuring work meets design specifications.
  • Maintain hand and power tools, cutting equipment, and safety equipment in clean and serviceable condition.
  • Follow workplace health and safety (WHS) regulations, site housekeeping, hazard identification, and correct PPE usage.

Responsibilities:

  • Deliver all bricklaying and blocklaying work to a high standard of quality, accuracy, and structural integrity.
  • Maintain personal accountability for safe work practices on every construction site.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, project managers, and other tradespeople regarding work progress, materials, and site conditions.
  • Ensure compliance with architectural plans, engineering specifications, and client requirements.
  • Participate in ongoing skills development to maintain competency in modern bricklaying techniques, building codes, and WHS obligations.


Qualification & experience

  • Certificate III in Bricklaying/Blocklaying (AQF) or equivalent trade qualification; At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications 
  • Ability to read and interpret architectural plans, engineering drawings, and specifications.
  • Competency in bricklaying, blocklaying, and decorative masonry techniques.
  • Proficient in using hand tools and power tools safely and effectively.
  • Knowledge of Australian masonry standards (AS 3700) and WHS regulations.
  • Strong communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
  • Minimum 1 year of full-time experience performing masonry duties on residential and commercial projects, demonstrating competency in laying walls, working with mortar, cutting/shaping bricks, installing reinforcement, erecting scaffolding, and quality checking work.
