Position Summary

The Mechanical Engineering Technician supports the efficient operation, maintenance and improvement of powder coating production systems, plant equipment and mechanical processes. The role assists in ensuring production machinery, conveyor systems, ovens, spray equipment and related mechanical components operate safely, efficiently and in accordance with operational specifications and quality standards.

Task & responsibilities

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assisting in the preparation of technical drawings, layouts and mechanical plans for powder coating production equipment, conveyor systems and plant modifications. 
  • Supporting Mechanical Engineers and production management in the design, installation and improvement of powder coating machinery, aluminium processing systems and automated production equipment. 
  • Assisting with the setup, assembly and installation of mechanical components, spray systems, curing ovens, hydraulic equipment and material handling systems used in coating operations. 
  • Selecting appropriate tools, testing devices and mechanical equipment required for maintenance, fabrication and production activities.  
  • Monitoring and inspecting plant equipment to ensure machinery operates efficiently and complies with safety, operational and quality requirements. 
  • Assisting with preventative maintenance schedules for coating lines, compressors, ovens, extraction systems and other production machinery to minimise downtime. 
  • Performing and coordinating mechanical testing, troubleshooting and fault-finding activities on plant and production equipment. 
  • Collecting operational data and preparing technical reports, diagrams and maintenance records relating to equipment performance and production efficiency. 
  • Estimating material requirements, spare parts, labour requirements and maintenance costs associated with machinery repairs and plant upgrades. 
  • Coordinating with production staff and contractors during machinery installations, repairs and plant improvement projects. 
  • Ensuring all mechanical works and finished outputs comply with engineering specifications, Australian standards, workplace safety regulations and company procedures. 
  • Assisting in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance productivity, coating quality, equipment reliability and operational efficiency across the manufacturing facility. 

Qualification & experience

Skills and Experience

  • Diploma or higher qualification in Mechanical Engineering Technology or related field. 
  • Minimum 1 year of experience working in manufacturing, powder coating, fabrication, industrial processing or production environments preferred. 
  • Knowledge of mechanical systems, hydraulic equipment, conveyors, ovens, compressors and industrial machinery. 
  • Ability to interpret technical drawings and engineering specifications. 
  • Strong troubleshooting, analytical and problem-solving skills. 
  • Good communication and teamwork abilities. 
  • Understanding of workplace health and safety requirements within industrial environments.
