We’re seeking an experienced Senior Claims Specialist, Financial Lines, to join our Sydney team, bringing strong technical capability in Financial Lines and Construction PI, along with a confident, client-facing approach.

Key responsibilities

As a Senior Claims Specialist, you will proactively manage a book of specialty claims throughout the full claim life cycle. Your portfolio will include technically complex, high-value matters, with exposure to construction PI and broader financial lines risks.

You will work closely with underwriters, brokers, clients, external advisors, and internal stakeholders to drive strong claims outcomes, support account retention, and contribute to Liberty’s market-facing presence.

  • Interpreting policy coverage and determining if coverage applies to claims submitted.
  • Managing and adjusting all incoming insurance claims for relevant business line, delegating administrative/ processing tasks to the offshore shared services team where appropriate.
  • Establishing and setting reserves for indemnity and defence costs, reviewing reserves on a regular basis to ensure adequacy.
  • Authorising payments in accordance with internal processes and within scope of authority, settling claims as expeditiously and economically as possible.
  • Ensuring that internal and external stakeholders and Liberty clients consistently receive a high level of claims service that differentiates Liberty from its competitors.
  • Providing instructions to external service providers with respect to coverage, investigation and ultimate settlement of claims.
  • Identifying opportunities and liaising with the Recovery team to ensure all avenues of recovery are pursued. Preparing files for suit, trial or subrogation where necessary.
  • Participating directly in mediation/ arbitration meetings and actively participating in settlement discussions.
  • Providing information to management on the existence or development of critical losses and advising relevant trends within the portfolio.
  • Working closely with other business lines in raising the Liberty profile and assisting in account retention and new business opportunities.
  • Managing the overall quality and performance of external service providers.
  • Consistently implementing, maintaining and monitoring departmental standards and procedures.
  • Working closely with the underwriting and risk engineering departments to promote Liberty’s “integrated business unit approach” and ensure seamless delivery of underwriting and claims management services.
  • In conjunction with underwriting, reviewing policy terms and conditions including assisting with the production of manuscript policy wordings and endorsements.
  • Participating in claims audits when required.
  • Identifying suspicious or potentially fraudulent claims, arranging investigation and briefing senior managers if further action is recommended.

Qualifications and Soft Skills

  • Significant previous claims management experience in Financial Lines or Legal industry essential
  • Tertiary qualifications in law or related discipline 
  • Sound knowledge of the Insurance Contracts Act and demonstrated ability to understand and apply legal principles to the management of claims.
  • Claims management experience in Construction PI
  • Ability to manage technical, high-value, and often sensitive claims
  • Client-facing and broker-facing experience
  • Strong legal and policy interpretation skills
  • A commercial mindset and good judgment
  • Strong communication and negotiation skills
